Judging the Best of Congo Cooperatives was an inspirational experience. While we've showcased Congolese coffees in the past, we hope that judging this competition and roasting this coffee will lead to even more delicious coffees from the country in the years to come!

Majirane stood out to us for its vibrant complexity, juicy acidity, and wonderful balance of tangy and sweet flavors. It's a lively, expressive washed coffee with a brightness that keeps things interesting and a sweetness that brings it all together. One of the most memorable Congolese coffees we've tasted, and a pretty exciting introduction to the cooperative behind it.

Great Coffee Against the Odds

Founded in 2020, Cooperative Agricole Majirane brings together approximately 500 farmers along the northwestern shore of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The cooperative specializes in washed coffees, operating two washing stations, Buchiro and Kishinji. Producing and exporting coffee from Eastern Congo has never been easy, and ongoing conflict in the region has made it even more difficult. Despite these challenges, Majirane continued its work and earned top honors at the Best of Congo Cooperatives competition. We had the privilege of tasting their coffee for the first time while judging the competition, and we're incredibly proud to share it as the second stop on our Award Tour.
